ADDRESS UNWANTED INK & BROWN SPOTS
As you enter a new stage in life, you may want to remove an old tattoo. Maybe you are looking for work, you have moved on in terms of a relationship, or you simply want a fresh start. No matter the reason, laser tattoo removal at Weymouth, MA’s South Coast Dermatology is a safe option.
Our Q-switched Ruby Laser can remove most tattoos by safely delivering the amount of energy required to effectively impact all ink types and depths—without damaging surrounding tissue. This includes difficult-to-treat ink colors, such as sky-blue and lime green. The technology is also appropriate for treating lesions, including freckles, sun spots, and age spots, for clearer, smoother skin.
HOW DOES TATTOO REMOVAL & LESION REMOVAL WORK?
The Q-switched technology works by delivering an extremely short and bright beam of light that breaks up the tattoo pigment or ink particles. As the area heals after a laser tattoo removal session, the body metabolizes the shattered pigment, ultimately revealing clear skin with minimal risk of scarring.
The wavelength used in this laser tattoo removal treatment is selectively absorbed by tattoo pigment in the skin without being absorbed by other molecules in the surrounding tissue. This enhances its safety and reduces side effects. The shorter the pulse, the more effective the laser. Hence, pulses of only 20 nanoseconds produce high peak power for better results with minimal pain.
For lesions, the treatment works in much the same way. Darker pigmented cells absorb the energy, which breaks up what are known as chromophores, and these are metabolized.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A TATTOO OR LASER REMOVAL SESSION?
The procedure for laser tattoo removal and lesion removal feels like a strong rubber band snapping against the skin. Most patients appreciate having a topical or local anesthetic applied prior to their session.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
Most tattoos can be removed in approximately six treatments, each spaced three to four weeks apart. The number of laser tattoo removal sessions will depend on the size of the tattoo and the colors used.

ARE TATTOO REMOVAL RESULTS PERMANENT?
Yes. After the tattoo is removed, it will not return, since the ink that formed it has been broken up and metabolized.
Touch ups are unnecessary.
WHAT SHOULD I DO AFTER A LASER TATTOO REMOVAL OR LESION REMOVAL PROCEDURE?
You will receive post-care instructions. Know that pain is usually minimal, but there will usually be crusting, blistering, or mild itching in the treated area. These reactions usually resolve in one to two weeks. We recommend washing the area gently and applying Vaseline or Aquaphor to speed the healing process. You may apply ice and take NSAIDS or Actaminophen to alleviate any discomfort.
WHAT ELSE ARE LASERS USED FOR?
Aside from laser hair removal, patients can choose laser tattoo and lesion removal, IPL for visible veins and spots, and cosmetic dermatology treatments that use light to rejuvenate the skin, smooth wrinkles, and more.
We can help determine which laser or light-based treatments are best for your needs.
